Le 19 janvier 2013 – Riki Lindhome et Kate Micucci sont deux actrices, aperçues çà et là dans des séries et des films US (Kate joue notamment la nounou tarée dans Raising Hope), mais elles ont surtout lancé en 2009 un groupe intitulé Garkunfel and Oates, dont les morceaux sont hilarants si vous avez la chance de comprendre un peu l’angliche.

Album Reviews: Niger Sounds from Bombino and Etran Finatawa

Sometimes it’s the simplest words that stop you cold.  Soft-spoken Tuareg artist Omara ‘Bombino’ Moctar proved this to me on a stiflingly hot summer evening at the 2012 PickathonFestival backstage. I was talking to him for their post-performance video interviews, aided by French-Canadian guitarist Yann Falquet as translator, and I wanted to ask him about the violence and upheaval in Mali and Niger. For decades the Tuareg people have fought for independence in Northern Mali, and part of the reason behind the popularity of Tuareg music in the West (Tinariwen and Terakaft being two of the most popular bands) is the gritty, desert-guerrilla-fighters side of the story. Western audiences love this kind of rough African exoticism, and though I wouldn’t say the bands have expressly tried to exploit this, it’s certainly aided their path into the mainstream of American indie music. On the way to the interview, I asked Bombino directly if we could talk about what was happening in Mali. He told me he’d rather not. And I couldn’t blame him, of course. He’d recently lost two of the musicians in his band to military executions in his home country of Niger. The wounds were still fresh.

Their debut album, The Chase is a beautiful combination of melodies from a large array of instruments that compliment vocalist Sabrina Halde’s voice perfectly. The album has been so well received in Montreal that they were chosen to play Canada’s second biggest music festival, Osheaga (alongside Beck, The Cure, Mumford and Son’s, Two Door Cinema Club). Tirelire, Rockfest et “pay to play”

Le quotidien Le Droit a fait détonner une petite bombe aujourd’hui : le Rockfest de Montebello – qui aura lieu ce week-end – se mettrait en mode “pay to play” pour certains artistes de l’underground ou encore de la relève. On y rapporte que certains contrats stipulent que les artistes recrutés ne recevront aucun cachet, ni repas, boisson ou victuailles, la visibilité qu’offre l’événement étant suffisante. De plus, certains groupes doivent également vendre un certain nombre de laissez-passer avant de finalement monter sur scène. On indique aussi que le nombre de billets vendus déterminera également le créneau horaire de la prestation.

She might only be in her early 30s but April Verch is already a seasoned vet of the folk circuit. She's been tapping and fiddling since she was in single digits and she shows no signs of slowing down. April is the Bandwidth feature interview this week.

In honour of Elliott BROOD playing Ottawa's WestFEST next weekend I pulled a 90 Second Egg out of the archives that goes back to the year the Brood first played the free festival:2006!

Loon Choir's Derek, Brad, and Nicole recorded a stunningly pretty Bandwidth Stripped-Down Session in Studio 14 this spring. In addition to great tunes we chatted about their career highlight thus far, which was playing Ottawa's RBC Bluesfest. Lucky for them, they get to do it again this year!
